Job Description

The Scottish Sports Association (SSA) is the independent and collective voice, representing and supporting Scottish Governing Bodies (SGBs) of sport. We represent their interests and currently have 52 full members and 15 associate members. The governing bodies of sport are responsible for the governance, development and delivery of their individual sports and provide a formal structure for the 900,000 sports men and women who are member of one of Scotland’s 13,000 sports clubs. Many of these organisations are run on a not-for-profit basis and are managed by volunteers. They provide coaching, competition and participation development opportunities to their local communities and most of the 195,000 people who volunteer in sport do so within the club structure.

Role: The SSA is looking to appoint an enthusiastic individual with significant experience of strategy or policy making within the education sector (primary and/or secondary) to provide guidance to the Board of Management. Experience of the delivery of sports through clubs or SGBs would be an extra asset. This role is key to the progression of the SSA and sport in Scotland and will be integral to the Board of Management. The post is non-remunerated however legitimate expenses will be covered.

The Opportunity: The successful individual will gain expertise of supporting and advising a small but dynamic Board. As a director, they will help to shape the future of Scottish sport, particularly in relation to opportunities and partnerships between education and SGBs and potential legacy opportunities for SGBs from the recent Commonwealth Games. This is a great opportunity for someone with a passion for sport and presents great potential for the development of new/existing skills, meeting new people and new networks and making a genuine difference to sport in Scotland.

Time Commitment: Approximately 5 hours per month. The post is non-remunerated although travel and meeting expenses will be reimbursed according to the SSA’s policies and procedures.

Accountability
• The post will be responsible to the membership, via the Board of Management and directly through the Chairperson of the Scottish Sports Association.
• The post will provide guidance to the Board of Management in all matters relating to the SSA’s partnerships with education and the curriculum in Scotland.

Main Duties

1. Attend SSA Board meetings and AGM/EGMs, providing reports as necessary
2. Keep up to date with, and advise the Board and staff of any relevant developments within the education sector
3. Act as an advocate for the role of sport within schools/the curriculum
4. Advise and support the Board/staff in relation to opportunities and partnerships with the education sector, including proactive new partnerships
5. Represent the SSA as required at meetings, conferences etc
6. Any other related duties as deemed necessary from time to time.

Terms and Conditions
The Director (Portfolio Expertise: Education) will be co-opted onto the Board of Management until the following Annual General Meeting where they will be elected onto the Board of Management for a two year term.
