Graduate Teaching Assistant (Sport / Exercise Science) – Sheffield Hallam University

Job Description
The Academy of Sport and Physical Activity, in the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing at Sheffield Hallam University, is looking for five talented individuals to join us on our exciting new four-year Graduate Teaching Assistant Studentship Scheme starting in October 2015. Designed to develop academics for the future, the scheme will be both challenging and highly rewarding.

With a focus on excellence in both research and teaching, it offers a unique opportunity to develop an academic career.

You will successfully complete a doctoral research programme within the disciplines of sport and exercise science, no later than 31/07/19.

Alongside this you will contribute to the delivery of our taught Sport programmes through tutorials, seminars and laboratory activities. You will also complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and gain fellowship recognition status from the Higher Education Academy. The core elements of the scheme are:

• £13,863 bursary
• A fully funded PhD programme
• A fully funded Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
• Leadership and support from your teaching and learning mentor, director of studies and two doctoral supervisors
• A programme of structured induction and ongoing personal development
• Regular appraisals to review learning, development and performance
• Attendance at relevant academic conferences

You will have a 1st or 2:1 undergraduate degree at date of commencement (or academic equivalent) in the area of sport and exercise science, along with well-developed knowledge of the discipline for which you are applying. A relevant Master’s degree would also be an advantage, but is not essential.

What is vital is that you have the drive and commitment to complete a PhD, and a strong ambition to teach in higher education at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

You will have experience of undertaking research, with the ability to initiate, develop and manage your own research programme – requiring excellent planning and organising skills. Excellent communication skills, specifically in terms of delivering presentations and written materials to a wide range of audiences, are also an essential part of the role.
