Editor, What Car? – The Haymarket Media Group – Twickenham, Greater London

What Car?, Britain’s biggest and best new car buying guide, is embarking on its biggest programme of digital expansion yet in 2016, both with the relaunch of its award-winning website and the launch of several ground-breaking offshoots.

We are looking to add to our team by appointing an experienced, dynamic editor who can lead the brand to further success through a combination of brilliant consumer journalism, cutting-edge online expertise and an eye for spotting opportunities before anyone else.

Already, every month our website is visited by more than 2.5m people looking to research and buy the best cars, while 750,000 people watch our video reviews, 150,000 people interact with us through social media and 50,000 people buy our magazine. Our successful applicant will view this as just the start of what is possible and be buzzing with ideas for how to move us even further ahead of our rivals.

The editor will work with the editorial director to lead the What Car? brand’s continued growth, developing the market-leading website and all other digital assets, as well as steering the magazine and all other brand offshoots while always staying true to our core ethos of giving the most thorough, expert and independent consumer-led new car buying advice to help people buy the best car for their budget and needs.

This means day-to-day leadership of the title and team and taking a leading role in future brand developments and projects.

You will be able to demonstrate experience of the highest standards of consumer journalism – and leading a team to achieve those standards. Key to this is helping create and articulate common goals for everyone to strive for, and leading by example on all fronts.

You will have an expert understanding of the car industry from a consumer’s perspective, or be able to demonstrate how you would develop one, and be able to represent and articulate that unique point of view among key industry players, both to promote our work and engage in high-level executive interviews.

You will live and breathe digital, constantly looking for better ways to grow our audience and improve the product. You will use analytics tools to underpin your decision-making.

Hand in hand with this, you will be able to lead the team producing What Car? magazine, show a willingness to innovate with the print product and juggle your time between the priorities of print and digital.

Day to day you will be responsible for setting, enacting and adapting content strategy according to the demands of readers and the business, whatever the outlet. You will be responsible for ensuring that everything published is relevant, accurate, has the correct tone and style and is legal.

You will ensure this content is well planned and widely distributed, using key marketing outlets to their best effect. You must prioritise digital and make sure that all print assets are developed for maximum online benefit.

All activity must be planned and enacted to budgets, for which you are responsible.

In the longer term, you will set and agree with the editorial director a strategy for short and long-term goals, setting targets and devising how they will be reached.

Experience

Ideally you will have experience in a similar role as a consumer editor, and be able to demonstrate high-level digital expertise and leadership.
