World University Summer Games – Chinese Taipei – British Universities & Colleges Sport

Job Description
British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is looking to appoint a volunteer Chief Medical Officer for the Summer World University Games 2017.

The successful applicants will take on the role for one World University Games cycle, from appointment through to conclusion of the events. Post-holders may be reappointed for an additional cycle dependent on performance. Successful candidates will also be responsible for supporting the BUCS domestic programme during their tenure.

Summer WUGs will consist of 12,000+ participants in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei, 19-30 August 2017, and it is anticipated Great Britain will send a delegation of around 150-200 persons.

In addition to the WUGs event duration and pre-event acclimitisation period, it is expected that the Chief Medical Officer will be available to attend pre-Games Briefings, management team meetings, and for preparation of physiotherapy equipment and supplies.

Additionally, the domestic BUCS National and BUCS ‘Big Wednesday’ Championships take place annually in February and March over a period of 2-4 days each. It is expected that the Chief Medical Officers will be available for the duration of these events.

It is expected that the Chief Medical Officer for the Summer WUGS will work closely with the CMO for the Winter WUGS, and also with the Summer and Winter WUGs Head Physiotherapists in respect of their role.

We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced individual to lead Medical support and delivery for the Summer WUGS.

General Duties
• Co-ordinate the selection and appointment of doctors
• Co-ordinate the selection and appointment of doctors for other BUCS Domestic and International events, from time to time
• Management of the Medical Team and Medical Centre in the Great Britain WUGS Headquarters in conjunction with the Head Physiotherapist
• Act as the main point of contact for the Head of International Programmes regarding medical information for teams attending the World University Games, including inoculations, climate information, fluid intake etc.
• To stock take and order medical supplies in conjunction with the BUCS office
• Maintain such information on treatment as required to provide accurate reports and records
• Manage any associated medical insurance claim processing and issues as are required
• Production of a post games Medical Report on issues arising for future reference and planning
• Act as a member of the Senior Management Team in conjunction with the Chef de Mission, Deputy Chef de Mission, Head Physiotherapist and BUCS Head of International Programmes (who may also act as DCdM)

Essential Qualifications
• Full GMC registration for at least 10 years
• Member of Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine (MFSEM) or equivalent – Fellowship of SEM would be desirable
• Current certification in emergency care e.g. REMO, ALS, ATLS
• Professional indemnity with a recognised provider of medical insurance e.g. MDU, MPS

Essential Experience
• To have demonstrated a regular clinical commitment to sports medicine for at least 5 years
• Experience of delivering medical support to elite athletes and teams at International competition level
• Experience of an International multi-sport event
• Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary medical team and as part of a wider Headquarters staff
• Fully conversant with doping regulations and procedures

Desirable Experience
• Demonstrated a commitment to BUCS sports medicine programme
• Previous experience as a medical officer at a World University Games or other multi-sport event
• Evidence of active involvement within student sport and an understanding, knowledge and awareness of University sport and the Higher Education sector within the UK’s high performance structure would be considered an advantage
• Ability to ski would be an advantage for candidates interested in the Winter CMO role

Remuneration
This is an honorary position, although travel and subsistence costs will be paid (where not otherwise provided).
