TES is looking for a News Editor with experience of print, digital, SEO and analytics.

Reporting to the Deputy Editor, the News Editor will work to organise the production of relevant and high-quality news content for the magazine and the website while adhering to the production deadlines and operating within editorial budgets.

Evidence of a strategic mind for new editorial projects and understanding and experience across new developments in digital journalism, analytics and social media would also be advantageous.

Key Responsibilities:

To generate content for the news pages and the news website by organising a forward diary of events, organising reporters, and ensuring coverage of scheduled events, as well as producing original ideas and new ways of presenting stories
To ensure the news reflects the readers’ interests and concerns
To contribute to the strategy for the ongoing development of the title
To take responsibility for the production of print news pages within a set schedule and similar with online news
To edit news stories as they are filed and monitor monitor editorial material for libel risk
To be responsible for the control of newsdesk budgets, including contributors, temporary staff and expenses
To agree the running order of the news stories, and keep the editors informed
To monitor rival publications and news sources for relevant stories
To manage the news team effectively, and motivate and encourage the team to produce well-written, relevant and informative articles; and be responsible for the recruitment, induction and development of staff
To maintain good relations between news and other departments within the magazine

You will be degree qualified (or have equivalent relevant experience) and have excellent management and interpersonal skills.    A self-starter with a high degree of personal motivation, you will be able to work to strict deadlines under pressure and easily assimilate information from verbal briefs.

You will have creative and original talent and be gifted at identifying original and exclusive news stories and easily editing filed copy into publishable stories.

Our preferred candidate will have previous experience in a similar position with a national publication or magazine and have in depth knowledge of legal issue related to libel and copyright laws.
