Data journalist, The Grocer – William Reed Business Media – Crawley, England

One of the great things about The Grocer is there’s lots of lovely data. Sales. Prices. Footfall figures. Availability stats. Clicks. Eyeballs. The FMCG industry is awash with amazing data. And The Grocer is lucky enough to be able to analyse a lot of it.

As a result, we get some fantastic stories. Stories that our audience of food and drink professionals love. Stories that are picked up by the national media. Stories that make The Grocer the biggest, most interesting and most high-profile trade magazine in the UK.

But to do what we do we need journalists who are highly numerate, and can find those fantastic stories hidden in numbers, spreadsheets and pivot tables. In other words, we need data journalists.

Of course we don’t just do numbers. We report on all aspects of grocery retailing, wholesaling and supply. And the magazine offers enormous variety, with topics covered including pricing and promotions strategy, the economy, consumer trends, property & planning, provenance, health and obesity, commodity pricing, food safety, innovation, supply chain, sourcing, branding, food to go, financial results, key people moves, shopper behaviour, pay & remuneration, advertising and marketing campaigns, copyright infringement, sustainability, online shopping and more. And always the aim when we recruit is to find reporters who can scoop the competition (including the nationals) and write compellingly and authoritatively about all aspects of the hugely important, political and high-profile fast moving consumer goods market.

You will also get to sample plenty of tasty (and not so tasty) food and drink. But above all we want to find great stories week in, week out, and providing comment, blogs, analysis, features and profiles of important industry figures. And having a head for figures doesn’t half help in this market. If you have any sort of training or aptitude in data journalism, Excel or other web-based tools, you’re well on the way to enjoying a great career on The Grocer.

A track record in trade/business news journalism won’t go amiss either.

Above all you will need ambition and an interest in the market (we are a passionate and committed team), and the personality, curiosity and intelligence to make numbers add up, while developing and networking with senior-level contacts.

The Grocer is the bible of the fmcg market, and the flagship title of the highly successful William Reed group, a family-owned publishing, events and market research business, whose interests include operations in the UK, France and the US.

It’s a high pressure environment, but for the right candidate, it offers huge job satisfaction, a good career path, a competitive salary, as well as company benefits comprising:

A contributory pension scheme
Life Assurance
25 days’ holiday
Discounted gym membership
Free car parking

Season ticket loan (on successful completion of probationary period)
We can also offer the right candidate flexible remote-working options.
