Breaking News Writer – UNILAD – Manchester

UNILAD are seeking an internet and social media savvy news junkie to cover the biggest news stories for UNILAD’s global audience. A young and innovative media company, our rapidly growing platform connects people to the latest trending stories and news. Based in our Manchester office we offer a competitive salary and monthly social events, and we spend way too much time watching and sharing the most awesome content on the web.

The position is well suited to an individual looking to break into the world of online media and is particularly eager to work in a start up environment. The ideal candidate, will be comfortable in a fast paced and ever changing habitat, and will be able to work independently. You must have outstanding news judgment and will spend your time on social networks tracking and reporting on the latest breaking news.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to

Take a point role gathering, verifying and confirming breaking news.
Write news stories that people want to share.
Get out the office and break news in the real world i.e. contact sources, go to locations, attend events – for any stories that require it.
Write stories so they are targeted to a Gen-Y audience, but in UNILAD’s global style and tone.
Find the right balance between the daily news agenda and detailed investigations.
Come up with ideas for posts with effective headlines aimed at sharing.
Participate in brainstorms with other writers and editors.
Provide feedback and support to other writers on the team when required.

Requirements

Experience dealing with the complexities of a big breaking news story.
Proven news judgement.
NCTJ or equivalent
Ability to write quickly, concisely and accurately whilst under deadline pressure.
Ability to discover and identify big stories, alongside, the ability to find clever, funny,
and unique angles on them.
News junkie with deep understanding of business, politics, and global affairs.
Ability to write both long, thought-provoking pieces and quicker riffs of the news
Ability to spot trends and generate ideas for larger projects. Fluency with images,
GIFs, video and other forms of multimedia.
A positive attitude and understanding of a start up environment
Proven social presence on multiple platforms.
Educated to degree level or equivalent

Nice to have

Basic knowledge/experience with Adobe Photoshop
