Director of Teaching and Learning – The Ascent Academies Trust – Sunderland

The Ascent Academies’ Trust comprises five special academies. This is an expanding Trust with additional academies increasing the geographical area of the Trust, with all academies still based in the North East of England. The Executive Team shares a strong, strategic view of all academies in the Trust and works in partnership to share best practice and improve outcomes for all students.

The Board of Directors is looking for an established and successful leader to join the Executive Team. This is a collaborative model of leadership that is derived from a mutually understood vision for students with SEN. This post is to specifically lead on improving the quality of T&L across two academies, Barbara Priestman Academy which in their recent Ofsted obtained a judgement of ‘good’ and Glendene Arts Academy which is currently in special measures. The latter is undergoing consultation to be sponsored by the Trust in the near future.

The successful candidate will

Have considerable and successful experience of strategic leadership in improving T&L
Have significant experience at Head or Deputy level
Have a thorough understanding and experience in meeting a range of special needs
Be able to coach and mentor others, maintaining high expectations and driving through improvements
Be passionate about working within a Multi-Academy Trust and with wider partnerships

This is a challenging role that will expect the post holder to

Be exceptional at providing challenge and support to colleagues in order to improve the quality of provision and outcomes.
Be accountable for significant, delegated aspects of leadership responsibility.
Enhance opportunities through partnerships optimising the benefits of being a Multi-Academy Trust
Take on the role of statutory Head Teacher where required.
