Job Description

Reporting to: Editor, Kelly Murray and General Manager, Justin Gawne

Position: Full time. Working hours: 9am – 5.30pm (5.00pm on Fridays) but with some extended hours and weekend work required (particularly when travelling within the UK and internationally).
Duties and Responsibilities

This position offers a unique opportunity for an established journalist to further their career with a successful, dynamic media company. As Assistant Editor you will play a key role in the editorial team, contributing a number of articles each issue and taking responsibility for certain sections of the magazine. You will be required to carry out research and conduct interviews in order to produce creative and original features, as well as sub-edit other editorial material.

The position will involve working on the magazine production as a whole, including contributing to layout design. A working knowledge of Photoshop and InDesign would be an advantage, although it is not essential. Experience of photography would also be favourable.

As well as the printed publication, some of your duties will cross over into the digital realm. Knowledge of content management systems, social media management and video editing would be an advantage.

When the Editor is travelling, you will be tasked with the daily running of the magazine’s editorial. Throughout the month, and particularly when deadlines are approaching, you will use your initiative and be a consistent support. You will work as part of a very close-knit team, liaising with the magazine’s advertising and sponsorship staff and Mondiale’s in-house production department.

You will on occasion be expected to guide and oversee the work carried out on the magazine’s internship programme.

The Ideal Candidate

Educated to degree level or above in Journalism, Media Studies or English, the successful candidate will be hard working, self-motivated and willing to work flexibly in order to maintain the high standards established at this fast-paced monthly trade magazine. The ideal candidate will have previous experience editing or assisting an Editor, and be dedicated to a career in journalism. You will be highly organised, punctual, enthusiastic and excited at the prospect of travel within the UK and overseas as and when needed.

Applicants should be confident to work as an individual, bringing innovative ideas and journalistic flare to the role, as well as a strong desire to work in and learn about the exciting live production industry. The fundamental ability to work as a team player is also vital. Attending events and trade shows is a key part of networking with the magazine’s advertisers and supporters, at which you will represent the magazine to a high standard.

This role would suit an experienced professional with a background in generating engaging content, ideally for magazines. Knowledge of the live music production industry is preferable but not essential; however, you will have the strength and ability to adapt quickly to the subject matter in hand.

You will be just as comfortable interviewing rock ‘n’ roll lighting designers as you will bespoke microphone manufacturers for the latest pop sensation. Occasionally, interviewing artists may be required, a setting in which you will be approachable and professional.

The company thrives on an informal, friendly atmosphere.

The closing date for this position is Friday June 12. Interviews will take place on the week commencing June 15.
