Job Description
OVERVIEW:
Formed in 2002 to improve refereeing standards, the PGMOL group officiate across all the Premier League, Football League and FA Competitions – funded by all three organisations. The PGMOL is responsible for the recruitment, training, development and mentoring of 112 referees and 257 assistant referees.

To deliver the quality of refereeing required by the Competitions, PGMOL mirrors the setup of a football club with coaches, sports scientists, sports psychologists and physiotherapists all part of the improvement process.

ROLE PURPOSE:
Responsible to the Head of Coaching, with strong working relationships with the Select Group 1 Senior Assistant Referee Coach, Select Group 2 Senior Referee Coach and National Group Director, the Coach will have the key task of coaching, mentoring and developing the Select Group 2 Assistant Referees to ensure consistent high standards of performance commensurate with the aims of PGMOL.

MAIN DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Coaching, mentoring and development of the Select Group 2 assistant referees

• Supporting Select Group 2 Assistant Referees to achieve the required individual and
group performance standards. To include creating individual action plans,
monitoring performance against agreed actions, delivering performance
improvements and providing motivational support
• Attending matches – it is expected that the Coach will see each assistant officiate at
a match at least twice during the season
• Liaising with the Sports Physiologists and Sports Psychologist to incorporate their
advice in action plans where appropriate
• Providing bi-monthly reports, performance assessments and quarterly performance
reviews for the Select Group 2 Assistant Referees
• Arranging Coaching Meetings with Select Group 2 Assistant Referees
• Attending meetings as required, including participating in Senior Coaches’ Meetings

Developing and implementing training programmes for the Select Group 2, National List and Panel Select Assistant Referees
• Implementing the framework for the development of the assistant referees
operating at SG2, National List and Panel Select to ensure delivery of the required
performance standards
• Working with the wider assistant referee coaching team to review for the Assistant
Referee groups
Working with the management team to promote the development of all PGMOL officials
• Attending coaching meetings with the wider AR coaching team
• Attending and completing a performance review with the SG1 Senior Assistant
Referee Coach
• Working with the management team to develop all PGMOL officials – to include
providing advice to other officials at matches and relevant feedback to other
coaches and the management team on officials outside of their group
• Supporting the Head of Professional Referee Development by advising on AR training
at each level, attending training events and participating in training as required
• Attending and participating in the Annual Conference
• Promoting the interests of PGMOL at all times with all PGMOL officials

PERSON SPECIFICATION (EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, APTITUDES AND PERSONAL QUALITIES):
Essential:
Qualifications/experience:
• Experience as a current PGMOL Coach or experience of officiating as an Assistant
Referee on the National List or Select Group within the last 4 seasons (2012/12 to
2015/16)

Knowledge:
• Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of current approaches to coaching and
assistant refereeing at Select Group and National List level, together with the
implications for delivering an effective coaching strategy
• Able to manage performance issues in line with PGMOL policy

Skills:
• Analytical and evaluation skills
• Excellent communication skills – verbal and non-verbal – with ability to adjust style
to individual personalities
• Excellent organisational skills with a systematic approach to planning and delivery
